Cincinnati’s 350 pound rookie defensive tackle previously grabbed the attention of the six-time Super Bowl winning coach.
The Athletic’s Brody Miller wrote a piece on Shelvin’s journey and the story behind his stock being lowered. In researching that story, Miller came across a story about none other than New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
He narrates that, when scouting LSU’s other talent, Belichick told those around him that he wanted them to make sure Shelvin ended up a Patriot.
Heard a cool Bill Belichick story while working on this.
While scouting the 2020 Draft for #LSU players like K’Lavon Chaisson, Patrick Queen and Jacob Phillips, Bill Belichick stopped the film and asked about Shelvin.
“I want No. 72. You make sure No. 72 is on our team.” https://t.co/jodFQUx0Co

Of course, that interest would subside some this year, as the team picked four players before the Bengals took Shelvin, including taking Oklahoma running back Rhamondre Stevenson just two picks before.
Nonetheless, the strong interest does say something about Shelvin’s ability and upside. He adds great size and length to a defensive line that already features D.J. Reader, meaning he won’t be asked to do much initially but is worth the investment long-term.
In the following video, John Sheeran tells us about the logic surrounding each of Cincinnati’s picks.
