Cincinnati Bengals Beat: Week 1 Training Camp News and Notes

August 4, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Cincinnati Bengals wrapped up their highly anticipated workout in Paycor Stadium on Saturday, and it’s been a productive first week for the orange and black. The defense has been the star of the show thus far, which is music to the ears of fans. The offense has had solid and steady moments, which is expected for a well-oiled machine like this. Recently signed Noah Fant from the Seattle Seahawks made his debut for the men in stripes and hopes to gel quickly with Joe Burrow so that he can cash in like the tight ends before him. Head coach Zac Taylor is ramping up the physicality of practice in hopes his team can hit the ground running in Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns. Let’s examine the latest news and notes from training camp in Cincinnati.

Slaton Strong

The newest face on the defense is T.J. Slaton, who looks to stabilize the interior of the Bengals’ DL and provide more juice pushing the pocket. He’ll play next to B.J. Hill, and the duo should be an upgrade in a crucial area for Al Golden. The early returns for Slaton have been positive, as he’s been a force to be reckoned with under the guidance of Jerry Montgomery, with whom he’s familiar from their time in Green Bay. Slaton should elevate those around him and also mentor sophomores Kris Jenkins and McKinnley Jackson, who could make a big jump in their production in year two.

Mindful of Mims

Right tackle Amarius Mims, who was fantastic in his rookie season, appears to be nursing a hand injury and notes that it’s something he’ll have to overcome as he strives to improve even further in 2025. Mims is a critical piece of the puzzle along the offensive line and one the Bengals need to have a stellar campaign if they are to protect Burrow and regain control of the AFC North.

Shemar Showing Up

The holdout of the 17th overall pick, Shemar Stewart, is finally over, and he’s been impressive when he’s on the field.

The bull rush seems to be Stewart’s go-to move early, and he’s going to have to diversify his pass rush sets if he wants to win when he’s on the field. The veterans have still been impressed with Stewart’s game, as B.J. stated, “He’s been making some plays out there for us; he’s a strong, physical, big-time athlete who can do a lot of things for us. Inside or outside. Glad to have him on our side. When he learns this defense, things are going to be very explosive for our defense.”

With Trey Hendrickson also coaching him up, Stewart seems to be in a good place to learn from the best in hopes of taking his skill set to the next level. If he stays on track, the Bengals may have hit the jackpot on what could be a special run if things fall their way.
