Evan McPherson is perfect so far in training camp as he goes back to what he ‘grew up doing’

Evan McPherson is looking for a bounce-back season.

Evan McPherson took the world, or at least throughout the Tri-State Area, by storm when he helped the Cincinnati Bengals reach the Super Bowl in 2021, his rookie season.

That year, he was 12 of 14 from beyond 50 yards, including going a perfect three-for-three in the playoffs. He earned the nickname “Money Mac” for his efforts and became a fan favorite.

Fast-forward to 2024, and it was a very different story. He made three of his seven attempts from beyond 50 yards and made 16 of his overall 22 attempts, giving him a 72.7 field goal percentage.

Training camp for the 2025 season is here, though, and McPherson is looking to rebound. According to Dan Hoard, McPherson has made every one of his field goal attempts so far in training camp, going a perfect 18-for-18.

McPherson told Hoard he may have gone too far down a corrective path after a great rookie season.

“After my rookie year, I went on a deep dive to figure out how I could be more consistent,” he said, per the play-by-play announcer. “It sent me the other way. This past off-season, I kind of went back to what I grew up doing.”

Whatever he does, going back to what he did to prepare for the draft and an awesome rookie season will only help the team. If the Bengals can get off to a quicker start, and if the defense improves, even a little, a consistent “Money Mac” could be the difference between going all the way to a second Super Bowl in his short career.

Maybe that means he’ll be this guy again….
