One of the best kickers in Bengals’ history talks about the Bengals’ newest kicker.
Jim Breech, recent Cincinnati Bengals Ring of Honor Nominee, is arguably the best kicker in franchise history. He spent 13 years with the Bengals and is one of the few players to have played for the Bengals in both Super Bowl XVI and Super Bowl XIII. His 1,151 points scored leads the franchise.
Breech recently spoke with AllBengals about his success, and about the Bengals recent addition at the position.
“The only thing I can control was the kick,” Breech said. “In practice you do the same thing over and over and over again, so when you go out there for a kick in the first quarter or a kick to win the game it feels the same and you don’t think about the outcome. If you start worrying about whether you make it or worrying about whether you miss it, you’re going to miss it more often than you make it.”
He also talked about the Bengals’ fifth round pick, Evan McPherson. While some thought that the Bengals drafted a kicker too high, there’s no doubt that McPherson was the best kicker in the draft.
“He’s very gifted. You see the height he gets on the ball,” Breech said. “Very consistent on his swing. I don’t know that I’d compare him to anybody, but I think he’s going to do really, really well. I’m excited for him.”
McPherson is expected to be the Bengals kicker right away. After years of Randy Bullock, who decent at times but still left a bit to be desired, the Bengals are ready to upgrade the position.
Breech thinks highly of the new Bengals’ kicker. Hopefully McPherson lives up to Breech’s legacy.
