Veteran Free Agent Interested in Joining Steelers – Ravens, Saints Could Intervene

July 3, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After spending one season with the Tennessee Titans, veteran free agent Tyler Boyd is open to the idea of joining the Pittsburgh Steelers. According to the report, the wide receiver said “absolutely” he would be willing to join the Steelers to play for them, and reportedly, he had the chance to meet with the team this offseason. Originally selected in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the former Pittsburgh product wants to play for his hometown team despite playing with rival, the Cincinnati Bengals, for the majority of his career before joining the Titans for one campaign. Boyd used to be one of the most reliable pass-catchers for the Bengals offense after having back-to-back campaigns of recording more than 1,000 receiving yards in 2018-2019.

However, the pass-catcher has lost his step during his final season with the Bengals due to the emergence of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Boyd wasn’t able to make a ton of impact with the Titans in one campaign, recording 39 receptions for 390 receiving yards. He isn’t the most explosive playmaker anymore, so the wide receiver is at minimum a possible WR3, and it’s easy to see why he could find a fit with the Steelers. They have yet to find another weapon for Aaron Rodgers despite signing Scotty Miller and Robert Woods, who are both past their prime.

Boyd is no different, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he starts receiving interest from other teams this offseason right before the 2025 campaign. These two teams could intervene and sign Boyd to at least a one-year veteran contract to see how he could contribute as a slot option.

More Weapons for Jackson

Despite signing DeAndre Hopkins this offseason to finally build a championship-caliber offense to help Lamar Jackson in his first possible Super Bowl appearance, they could benefit from adding another weapon. After not taking the chance to re-sign Nelson Agholor to at least another one-year deal, the Ravens should build depth in their pass-catching department. No one is taking starting reps from Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman as both of these receivers will be here in Baltimore for a long time, but someone like Boyd could be a solid slot receiver for Jackson to throw to in the middle. Jackson knows how to bring out the best in a receiver who wants another opportunity in the league, and he would improve his play coming off his worst statistical season in Tennessee.

Boyd isn’t going to top 1,000 receiving yards, but he could help Hopkins for the longevity of this offense and give Jackson another body to lean on in pressure moments.

Rebuilding the Saints’ Offense

Meanwhile, general manager Mickey Loomis will have no other choice but to rebuild his roster after refusing to do that. After losing Derek Carr to retirement, the Saints are back at square one in the quarterback battle between Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler. Veteran Brandin Cooks is getting older and won’t be the same Saint that most fans will remember. Even though Chris Olave wants to stay with the team for life, it doesn’t mean he won’t consider another option in a potential trade request if it comes to wanting a championship, where New Orleans is nowhere near that.

Rashid Shaheed is entering the final year of his contract soon, and adding someone like Boyd could provide some more flexibility in the aerial attack for either Boyd or Shough.
