Duke and Kentucky among schools reaching out to five-star guard Brandon McCoy, Alabama latest to offer

COLORADO SPRINGS, Col. — St. John Bosco (Cal.) point guard Brandon McCoy was one of only four Class of 2026 players to make the USA Men’s U17 team for the upcoming 2024 FIBA World Cup in Istanbul, Turkey.

It’s been a busy week for McCoy considering that this past Saturday he was also able to directly talk to college coaches for the first time as well.

“It’s been a lot of schools [contacting me], but to name a few Duke, Kentucky, Michigan State, Arizona, UCLA, USC, Michigan, Cal Berkeley, Kansas, and BYU,” he told ZAGSBLOG in an exclusive interview at U17 training camp. “Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.”

Alabama, the preseason favorite to win the 2025 NCAA championship, became the latest to offer him on Thursday.

McCoy said he’s already spoken with two coaches from Duke.

“I’ve talked to Coach [Jon] Scheyer personally on the phone and I’ve talked to Coach Jai Lucas,” said McCoy.

McCoy spoke with Jason Hart with Kentucky as well. Despite all this, no unofficials are lined up at this time, as McCoy and his parents are still figuring that out. And despite being a consensus top five recruit in the Class of 2026 McCoy wants to work on some things as well.

“One thing I want to focus on is definitely playing consistently, doing my role all the time, always making the right play and playing hard,” he said. “I feel like I do that, but you can always play a little harder. [I want to] get stronger and get my shot consistent.”

McCoy did not have a dream school or conference growing up as a kid. And he describes himself as hard worker and team player.

“I think I’m a hard working player,” he said. “[I’m] a good teammate. I’m a leader and coachable.”
