Former Kentucky and Troy wide receiver Chris Lewis has officially announced his medical retirement from football, capping a remarkable journey of perseverance after a life-changing cancer diagnosis, according to his social media post on Monday.
Lewis began his career with the Wildcats, where his talent as a wide receiver drew attention. After former UK assistant Jon Sumrall accepted the head coaching job at Troy, Lewis transferred to join him, hoping for more playing time — and that’s exactly what he got. In the 2023 season, Lewis posted 735 receiving yards and ranked among national leaders with 10 touchdown catches, establishing himself as a rising star.
However, after the season, Lewis experienced discomfort in his left leg. An MRI revealed osteosarcoma—an aggressive bone tumor in his femur. He underwent 10 weeks of chemotherapy, surgery to remove the tumor and another 10 weeks of treatment.
In September 2024, Lewis was declared 100% cancer-free. He shared the joyous news on social media while also continuing to seek support through a GoFundMe campaign to cover the financial strain of his treatment.

“As I look back on my journey, I’m filled with gratitude,” Lewis wrote. “Being able to live out my dream at Troy University has been one of the greatest blessings of my life… Unfortunately, in December 2023, my career took a turn I didn’t see coming… This isn’t how I pictured the end, but I trust God’s plan.”
Though his playing days are over, Lewis’ strength and grace in the face of adversity continue to inspire.
