Former Kentucky wing Kahlil Whitney says he ‘probably’ would’ve transferred to Michigan

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Former Kentucky wing Kahlil Whitney says he “probably” would’ve transferred to Michigan after abruptly leaving the Wildcats halfway through the 2019-20 season.

“Probably Michigan. Those are the guys who recruited me at the time,” Whitney, 22, said Friday night when he was in attendance for Roselle Catholic’s Non-Public B state championship win at Jersey Mike’s Arena.

In January 2020, the 6-foot-6 Whitney announced he was leaving John Calipari’s program mid-way through the season. At the time, he was linked to Seton Hall, Georgetown and Illinois — but not Michigan.

Asked if he would’ve done anything different during his time at Kentucky, he said, “No, I just probably would’ve been a little more patient with things.”

He ended up in the NBA G League where he has averaged 7.2 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 443 games for the Greensboro Swarm and Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

Whitney played two games last month in the FIBA Cup in Spain with the RGV Vipers. In the first game, a loss, he had 1 point on 1-of-3 shooting and in the second game, a win, he had 6 points and 1 rebound on 2-of-4 shooting.

He said he suffered a fractured toe a couple of months ago and is “just now getting healthy.”

Whitney is now considering “a couple job offers” in Spain and the Australian NBL. He plans to “take the next week” to make a decision on his next step.

“I’m not sure,” he said. “Right now we got playoffs coming up in Spain. I’m trying to find the right situation.”
