Wimsatt could be a nice Wildcat QB option for the Cats.
The Kentucky Wildcats are going to rely heavily on Brock Vandagriff as QB1 next season, while Beau Allen is likely going to be his backup.
After that, Kentucky has true freshman Cutter Boley in case of an emergency. Judging by the team’s recent portal movement, it appears Mark Stoops would like a little more security at the most important position.
The Cats recently hosted UCLA QB Collin Schlee for a visit, though he eventually signed with Virginia Tech.
Now, Kentucky is hosting Rutgers QB Gavin Wimsatt for a visit, according to KSR.
Originally a 4-star recruit in the 2021 class, the Owensboro native started 18 games for the Scarlett Knights during his three years in Piscataway, though he never could find his footing.
Last season, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Wimsatt completed 138/289 passes (47.8%) for 1,735 yards and nine touchdowns vs. eight interceptions. He also ran the ball 131 times for 497 yards (3.8 avg) and 11 touchdowns.
For his career, he’s completed 212/455 passes (46.6%) for 2,537 yards and 14 touchdowns vs. 17 interceptions. He’s also got 180 carries for 628 yards (3.5 avg) and 11 scores.
Like Schlee, Wimsatt is a dual-three option who could end up playing as a Wildcat QB who sees significant playing time, even if he’s the backup QB. And while there’s hope that Allen can be a quality backup, I think we’d all like to see there be another legitimate challenger for the No. 2 spot while Boley is redshirted.
