Kentucky battles La Familia in a competitive summer scrimmage, showcasing standout performances from past and present Wildcats.
Kentucky basketball got a major offseason test Wednesday night, taking on the La Familia alumni squad in a closed scrimmage in Lexington.
In a competitive back-and-forth battle, the Wildcats ultimately pulled out the win by eight points, according to Matt Jones of KSR.
The starting lineup for Kentucky featured Jaland Lowe, Denzel Aberdeen, Otega Oweh, Trent Noah, and Brandon Garrison, which is a surprise, since many thought Mo Dioubate would be starting over Noah. The game ended on an Elam Ending, with Denzel Aberdeen sinking the game-winner, according to Jack Pilgrim of KSR.
La Familia featured former Wildcats like the Harrison Twins, Archie Goodwin, Willie Cauley-Stein, and Doron Lamb, who didn’t make things easy. Archie and the Harrison brothers were reportedly the top performers for the alumni squad, says Jones of KSR.
As for Kentucky, the standouts were Oweh and Lowe, who one observer called “clearly the best players” on the court for the Wildcats, Jones added.
The highlight reel was loaded. Archie Goodwin opened with a tough contested two, but Trent Noah answered with a floater, and Brandon Garrison hit Noah on a cut for an easy bucket. Lowe and Jasper Johnson each drilled threes, and Aberdeen nailed several shots, including the final dagger.
Oweh was everywhere with finishing strong at the rim, drawing fouls, and hitting from midrange and deep. Dioubate made an impact with strength inside and a three over Cauley-Stein. The intensity, skill, and team chemistry were evident.
For Kentucky, it was a promising step forward.
