This would be a big get for the Cats if they can overcome the Noles.
The Kentucky Wildcats are among the top suitors for Cincinnati Bearcats wide receiver Tony Johnson, On3’s Pete Nakos is reporting.
The Cats, led by Mark Stoops, are trying to reshape an offense that had numerous flaws last season. Johnson would be a huge addition to the roster if the Cats are able to close the deal. While multiple programs are still in the running, per Nakos, the Seminoles and Wildcats seem to have the lead.
“Kentucky and Florida State are both in the market for a transfer wide receiver this spring. Sources tell On3 that the Wildcats and Seminoles are currently vying for one of the top available wide receivers in the transfer portal,” he wrote.
Johnson was at Florida Atlantic before making his way to Cincinnati, a program now playing in the Big 12. He has increased his production in all three seasons in which he has played double-digit games.
This past year, he went for 449 yards and six touchdowns for the Bearcats. John’s best game came in a 19-13 road win over UCF for the Bengals, securing 76 yards and a touchdown. He also had a two-touchdown performance against Kansas State.
That said, the Cats currently incoming transfer Kendrick Law along with returning players Ja’Mori Maclin and Fred Farrier II, but there’s certainly room to add more. Zach Calzada is the expected starting quarterback, and he would welcome another proven threat to this offense, one that hopes to rebound from last year’s debacle.
