Mark Pope has bolstered Kentucky’s coaching staff for the 2024-25 season in a major way.
According to Matt Norlander of CBS Sports, Alvin Brooks III is leaving Baylor to be an assistant coach for Kentucky.
Brooks, 44, coached at Baylor from 2016-2024. Prior to joining Baylor’s staff, he spent time at Midland, Bradley, Sam Houston State and Kansas State.
Norlander pointed out that Brooks’ departure from Baylor is quite ironic considering Scott Drew was once linked to Kentucky’s job opening.
“It’s an ironic twist: Scott Drew turned down Kentucky, only to lose his top assistant to UK less than two weeks later,” Norlander wrote. “Drew—who could have a top-10 roster soon—has to replace his top two guys on staff. John Jakus—who also was on ’21 title-winning staff—got the FAU job last month.”
Brooks should be a great addition to Kentucky’s staff. The Houston native has proven to be a great recruiter over the years.
As for Kentucky, this hire is a clear sign that people want to work with Pope. That should erase any concerns about his outlook in Lexington.
Pope’s staff at Kentucky also features Jason Hart, Cody Fueger and Mark Fox. He has one more spot to fill for next season.
