Kentucky was likely going to need to add a linebacker from the transfer portal, so who better than someone with a connection to the current staff?
According to national college football reporter Chris Hummer of 247 Sports, Jacquez Jones–who spent the last three seasons as one of the best players on the Ole Miss defense before announcing his intention to transfer on June 1–will be in the mix for three teams as of right now: South Carolina, Kansas, and Kentucky. When Jones was a true freshman in 2018 at Ole Miss, he played under Kentucky’s current assistant Jon Sumrall.

Here is what Hummer had to say about Jones’ status:
It came as a big surprise when Ole Miss linebacker Jacquez Jones announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal on Tuesday. He led the Rebels with 75 tackles last season and projected to be a big part of the defense in 2021. Jones is not yet officially in the portal (Update: Jones was listed in the portal late Thursday afternoon, per a source). But upon entry a source with knowledge of the situation indicated they expect three teams to enter the mix: South Carolina, Kentucky and Kansas.
Jones was a three-star recruit out of high school and did not hold an offer from Kentucky before landing with Ole Miss. He was an SEC All-Freshman selection in his rookie season before moving into a full-time starter position the last two years. Jones led Ole Miss in tackles (75) this past season. With the season-ending injury to Wildcat linebacker D’Eryk Jackson and the loss of Jamin Davis to the NFL, Kentucky could use another player at the linebacker position to help improve the depth.
