Kirk Herbstreit Admits College GameDay Made Last-Second Change For Week 3

September 14, 2024 by The Spun

Predicting Every College GameDay Location For The 2024 Season (1:01)

For the first time in a decade College GameDay is heading to Columbia, South Carolina to see the Gamecocks take on the SEC rival LSU Tigers. But ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit recently revealed that going to the Palmetto State wasn’t always the plan.

Taking to X on Thursday, Herbstreit responded to a user asking why ESPN didn’t take the college football pregame show to Lexington, Kentucky for the Kentucky Wildcats’ home game against the Georgia Bulldogs.

“Why are you not on the call for the Georgia Kentucky game. Prime time ABC,” the user wrote to Herbstreit.

A few minutes later, Herbstreit revealed that having GameDay in Lexington was the original plan until the Wildcats “spit the bit” in a 31-6 blowout loss to South Carolina. College GameDay decided to adjust as they so often do and picked Columbia instead of Lexington to host their show.

“Because Kentucky spit the bit last week. CGD was a lock for UK if Cats won last week and we would have called the game as well. But South Carolina dominating that game we always adjust to the results from the previous week,” Herbstreit wrote.

Kentucky fans in the replies are now lamenting that loss to South Carolina even more:

“Simply put.. you’re right Kirk, major let down. Was a must win for our season in a lot of people eyes,” one Wildcats fan conceded.

“Our peewee league performance cost us one of biggest weekends in Lexington ever! Gonna be a long long time before we might have the opportunity again!!!! GOOD ONE FELLAS!!!!!” another lamented.

“I didn’t need to be more depressed about my Kentucky boys (expletive) the bed,” a third wrote.

Better luck next time, Big Blue Nation.
