Hello, friends. Happy Hump Day. Even though it feels like the start of Summer Radio, this week has continued to deliver Kentucky football and basketball news. Before we get into that, there’s something much more important we must address.
If you don’t have a Real ID or a passport, you cannot fly in the United States. The Real ID mandate went into effect today, and for some procrastinators, it’s a harsh reality. If air travel is in your future, you gotta sit and wait in a long line at the DMV.
To be more specific, in the Commonwealth of Kentucky there are only 34 locations for 120 counties. It’s part of the reason why less than 37% of the state is Real ID compliant. You can theoretically book an appointment, but there are zero available in the six Lexington or Louisville locations. As someone who dealt with a licensing snafu within the last year, I can tell you that there is a walk-up line, but you better set aside at least four hours and pray that you’re lucky. It’s hell.
My favorite part of the new Real ID law is that you can spend all of that time waiting around, and you still won’t leave with a new card (especially if you don’t have the proper forms). They’ll give you a piece of paper as a temporary Real ID until a new one arrives in the mail a few weeks later. I won’t pretend to understand why we need a change in IDs to fly, but I can say with 100% certainty that it is one huge pain in the rear end.
There is at least a small light at the end of the tunnel. TSA is expected to be lenient in the first days of the transition. If you can’t get a Real ID in time, show up to the airport early and bring multiple forms of ID. You should be granted some grace. Fingers crossed.
Two New Football Commits
Just when you thought they were done, the Kentucky football program added a few inexperienced players from the transfer portal.
Rob Fogler, an offensive lineman from Cincinnati, is transferring to Kentucky after spending two years at Ball State without logging a snap. Wide receiver Ashton Cozart has a little more on his resume. The former Top 200 player who spent time at Oregon, and most recently SMU, has one career reception for 24 yards.
The production doesn’t pop off the page. At least in Fogler’s case, most offensive linemen take two years for the cake to bake. His developmental trajectory is not abnormal, especially when he’s expected to be a depth addition. It’s more difficult to discern what Cozart’s addition means for the Kentucky wide receiver room, but it’s clear they felt a need to add more players this spring. By Adam Luckett’s count, there’s only room for one more new player on the roster.
Kentucky Derby Winner OUT of the Preakness
The Triple Crown dream is dead. For the second time in four years, the Kentucky Derby winner is opting out of the Preakness Stakes as Sovereignty will point toward the Belmont. The trend is becoming more of a norm, leading many fans of the sport to call for a change to the Triple Crown format. While it may make sense in more than one way, there are a few obstacles in the way.
Kentucky Softball OUT of the SEC Tournament
The 2025 Kentucky softball season may have ended in the SEC Tournament. Kentucky was on the wrong end of a shutout, falling 8-0 to Georgia. The Cats dropped to 29-26, 7-17 in SEC play, likely ending a disappointing season on the diamond.
Dave Portnoy Reviews Kentucky
Matt Jones caught up with the head of Barstool Sports at the Bet Gala to talk all things Kentucky. Take a look.
Tyrese Halliburton Broke Cleveland’s Heart
It was a bad night to be a Zack Geoghegan. The Cavs’ dream season, their best-ever without LeBron James, was ended on their homecourt last night. It’s not over, but it’s over.
Playing without three injured stars — Garland, Mobley, and Hunter — Donovan Mitchell put the team on his back. The former Card scored 48 points and Cleveland looked like they were going to escape with a win. Instead, an epic collapse ensued. They led by seven points with less than a minute to play. One mistake after another led to a big mistake, letting Tyrese Haliburton rebound his own missed free throw, then deliver a game-winning three. Cinema.
According to ESPN Stats and Info, since 1997-98, teams are 3-1,640 when trailing by 7+ in the final minute of the 4th quarter/OT. The Pacers, this postseason, have two of those wins.
We have two games on the docket tonight. The Celtics will try to even up the series with the Knicks (7 PM ET, TNT) before the Thunder hosts the Nuggets (9:30 PM ET, TNT). It’s been a bad time to be a home team. We’ll see if that changes on Wednesday.
