UK Athletics hosted the 23rd annual CATSPY Awards inside Historic Memorial Coliseum on Monday, recognizing some of the top student-athletes on campus both as competitors in their respective sports and in the classroom. 35 total individuals were honored to go with 15 total teams, headlined by a trio of Teams of the Year: volleyball, rifle and baseball.
As for the individuals honored, the prestigious Mr. Wildcat awards went to Eli Cox from football, Devin Burkes from baseball and Lamont Butler from men’s basketball while Miss Wildcat went to Isabella Magnelli from gymnastics and Brooklyn DeLeye and Emma Grome from volleyball. Those awards are dedicated in honor of the late Bruno Agostinelli — a UK men’s tennis All-American and past Mr. Wildcat winner — and presented to Wildcats who have represented all-around excellence in athletics, academics, character and service during their Kentucky careers.
Elsewhere, women’s basketball’s Clara Strack and men’s track and field’s Collins Kiprop Kipngok were named Newcomers of the Year, while women’s basketball’s Georgia Amoore and DeLeye earned Female Athletes of the Year. Male Athlete of the Year went to Ryan Waldschmidt of UK baseball.
Blue Heart Awards were handed out to Kate Powers from women’s track and field and Eli Stephenson from men’s tennis after overcoming injuries to return to action and make significant contributions to their teams.
UK President Dr. Eli Capilouto also earned the Heart of a Wildcat Award for his unwavering support and dedication to UK Athletics and its student-athletes.
Don’t forget about the classroom awards, too, with men’s cross country and women’s golf named Academic Teams of the Year while seven Wildcats — Patrick Herrera and Evan Byers from baseball, Grant Darbyshire from men’s basketball, Alex Justus from men’s track and field/cross country, Ainsley Edwards and Phoebe McCowan from women’s track and field/cross country and Kaelan Daly from women’s swimming & diving – earned Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
