Preakness Stakes 150: Post Positions, Morning Line Odds for Second Triple Crown Race

The second jewel of the Triple Crown will not shine so bright for the 150th running of the Preakness Stakes. Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty is skipping the trip to Pimlico to rest up for next month’s Belmont Stakes.

There’s not nearly as much juice in this race without a Triple Crown on the line, but there are still a few noteworthy horses racing for a pretty big purse at Pimlico.

Journalism suffered his first loss since his debut in the Kentucky Derby. Neck-and-neck with Sovereignty down the stretch, he failed to fire in the last furlong, resulting in a second-place finish. Unlike his counterpart, Mike McCarthy is giving Journalism the green light to race this Saturday. He’s the 8-5 morning line favorite.

There are a couple of other Kentucky Derby horses in this year’s Preakness. Fan favorite Sandman won the Arkansas Derby, but finished seventh on the first Saturday in May. D. Wayne Lukas has never been afraid of racing his horses on short rest. Virginia Derby winner American Promise is in the Preakness field after finishing 17th at Churchill Downs.

Rodriguez was expected to be a top-five choice in the Kentucky Derby until a foot bruise scratched him from the race. Unfortunately, that injury lingered too long, sidelining Rodriguez for the second leg of the Triple Crown.

That doesn’t mean Bob Baffert will not be represented at the Preakness Stakes. The lightly-raced Goal Oriented has two wins in two starts, including an allowance victory on Derby Day at Churchill Downs. Baffert has eight Preakness Stakes wins, most recently National Treasure in 2023.

The $2 million Preakness Stakes is Saturday, May 17, at Pimlico Race Course. NBC will provide coverage from 4-7:30 PM ET, with post time for the second Triple Crown race set for 7:01 PM.
