Illinois is fighting to keep Orlando Antigua in Champaign.
Two sources have told KSR that the Illinois Men’s Basketball program has made a “substantial” counteroffer to help prevent assistant coach Orlando Antigua from leaving the team to accept an assistant coaching position with Kentucky. Matt Jones is reporting that if Kentucky were to match the offer, Antigua would likely take the job with UK, making him the highest-paid assistant in the country.

Rumors gained traction starting on Wednesday that Antigua could be heading back to Lexington and turned serious once Jeff Goodman of Stadium reported that Antigua was in fact likely coming back to Kentucky. Earlier on Thursday, it was reported that two of Kentucky’s current assistants, Joel Justus and Tony Barbee, would be accepting new positions elsewhere–Justus as the top assistant at Arizona State and Barbee the head coach at Central Michigan.
