This is not an easy post to type. There are mental hurdles and physical frustrations that occur when two spectacular events coincide with one another, forcing me to wonder what exactly I should do with my hands. I know that I’m supposed to type, but what words? They say write what you know and all I know is that I cannot handle the NFL Draft and Kentucky Derby falling in the same week.
Every waking moment has been spent watching race replays, skimming mock drafts, listening to “the experts” handicap horses, crunching numbers, playing out what-ifs and daydreaming of cloudless skies, surrounded by beers and bourbon with 15,000 of my closet friends in the Greatest 26 Acres in Sports.
My Derby Week began by having a 10-minute conversation with Brad Cox, a fellow South Ender who just so happens to have the Derby favorite. Shortly after that I learned Ben Sollee will be rocking the Thurby stage, the perfect warm-up for Jamin Davis to hear his name called in Thursday’s NFL Draft. I love it when a plan comes together.
While I daydream of the most wonderful weekend, there are still other things happening around the Big Blue Nation, like…
Your Complete NFL Draft Guide
When I say that I have been crunching numbers, I actually mean that Adam Luckett has been crunching numbers. A Football Guy’s Football Guy, he’s looked at this draft up and down, forwards and backwards. Tonight he’s reached his conclusions on where each Wildcat will be selected in this week’s draft. Once you read that, you can listen to him talk about it all on a new edition of 11 Personnel.
A New Depth Chart Podcast
If you can’t wait to get your football podcasting fix, don’t you worry. I’ll be joining Freddie Maggard to talk some ball shortly as he shares his thoughts on the NFL Draft in a special podcast that will be unveiled right around lunchtime this afternoon. Don’t miss it.
Has Kyle Shanahan Lost his Mind?
Finessing the media is a point of pride for many coaches. Some are better than others at saying words that mean nothing. There’s “coach speak,” and then there’s this from Kyle Shanahan that took a dark, twisted turn.
Kyle Shanahan was asked if Jimmy Garoppolo would be on the 49ers’ roster on Sunday.

What the 49ers will do with the third pick in the draft has been a talking point for months. Finally, those questions will be answered in just over 48 hours.
See ya, Carlik Jones
The Louisville Cardinals lost their best basketball player. Jones, a grad transfer from Radford that was the runner-up for ACC Player of the Year, announced Monday he will not use his extra year of Covid eligibility to play one more season for Chris Mack. Now without Jones or David Johnson, Mack’s backcourt will rely almost completely on transfers, setting up what could be another long season in Louisville.
Everything You Missed from a Basketball Recruiting Weekend
Jack Pilgrim and Zack Geoghegan got a slice of normalcy over the weekend by attending their first recruiting event since the start of the pandemic. They talked about what they saw on Sources Say, then wrote about the top performers . Jack and Zack also had a conversation with ESPN’s preeminent basketball scout, Jonathan Givony, who had nice things to say about Tyty Washington and Daimion Collins.
Boogie is Back
DeMarcus Cousins has battled injuries to get back into the NBA. Yesterday he signed a deal to remain with the Clippers for the remainder of the 2021 season, then took out years of frustration on his former team, the Pelicans. New Orleans served as the initial catalyst for Boogie’s injury problems. As restitution, he made the rim pay.

Cousins finished the night with 16 points and 11 rebounds in only 25 minutes of action. Boogie’s big dunk was the highlight of the night, slightly ahead of this bomb from Immanuel Quickley. Unfortunately, it was not enough to help the Knicks secure the win. Devin Booker ended their 8-game win streak by scoring 33 in a 118-110 win.

Salute to Mac Whitaker
The long-time Harrison County coach made history Monday night when the Thorobreds defeated Model 15-0 for Whitaker’s 1,145th victory, surpassing PRP’s Bill Miller for the most in Kentucky high school baseball history. Harrison County celebrated the moment by renaming the baseball field Mac Whitaker Field.
