Tre Mitchell will play for West Virginia’s TBT team — not La Familia

Fun news out of Morgantown means sad news out of Lexington, unfortunately, as Tre Mitchell will be suiting up — but not for Kentucky’s alumni squad, La Familia. Instead, the former Wildcat who wrapped up his eligibility in blue and white will be playing for Best Virginia alongside other WVU alums.

Mitchell played one season at West Virginia, averaging 11.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists per contest in 34 games and 32 starts. He started his career at UMass, spending two years there before making the move to Texas in 2021-22 before exploring life as a Mountaineer in 2022-23. He averaged 10.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.0 blocks in 30.2 minutes per game across 27 appearances at Kentucky.

Choosing between four schools in five years, Mitchell has committed to his third stop in the alumni event.

The rest of the Best Virginia roster includes Eduardo Andre, J.D. Weatherspoon, James Reese V, Jarrod West, Jermaine Haley Jr., John Flowers, Kedrian Johnson, Marcellus Garrick, Wesley Harris, Will Vorhees and Toby Okani.

Mitchell, obviously, is the star of that group.

Kentucky’s alumni squad features the likes of Andrew and Aaron Harrison, Willie Cauley-Stein, Doron Lamb, DeAndre Liggins and Archie Goodwin, among others. YouTube sensation Jesser — who has 31 million subscribers — and Enes Kanter’s little brother, Kerem Kanter, have also signed up to play for La Familia.

That journey starts on July 18, one week from Friday. La Familia will play Stroh’s Squad at 9:00 p.m. ET on FS1. If La Familia advances to the second round, they will face the winner of War Ready (Auburn Alumni) and X-Rayted on Sunday, July 20, at 2:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports. The Lexington Regional championship game is Tuesday, July 22, at 6 p.m. ET on FS2. Tickets for the Lexington Regional are still available at TBTHoops.com/tickets.

The winner of the Lexington Regional will play the winner of the Louisville Regional in the quarterfinals on Monday, July 28, at 6 p.m. on FS1. The semifinals and $1 million winner-take-all championship game will be July 31 and Aug. 3.
