Vanderbilt head coach Mark Byington has added former Kentucky staffer Brady Welsh to his staff has director of men’s basketball performance.
Welsh heads to Nashville after previously working at Kentucky, Purdue, Illinois and Temple.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Mark H. Carter and Family Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball Head Coach Mark Byington has tabbed Brady Welsh as the director of men’s basketball performance.
Welsh will lead all aspects of strength and conditioning for the Commodores. He comes to Nashville with extensive experience in college basketball at Kentucky, Purdue, Illinois and Temple.
“Brady’s position is extremely important to the success of our basketball team and we are lucky to have one of the best in the country at Vanderbilt,” said Byington. “He has tremendous experience impacting successful athletes and maximizing their careers. Our players will love his enthusiasm and the energy he brings every day.”
Welsh spent the past year training Houston Rockets rookie and former Kentucky standout and 2023-24 National Freshman of the Year Reed Sheppard. Welsh previously served as Kentucky’s director of basketball strength and conditioning from 2022-24.
“I’m honored to join the Vanderbilt basketball program alongside Coach Byington and his staff and contribute to its tradition of excellence,” said Welsh. “My aim is to elevate our performance through comprehensive, evidence-based decision making. Our program’s goal is to foster resiliency, discipline and success through togetherness, hard work and consistency.”
Prior to his time at Kentucky, Welsh served in the same role with Purdue in 2021-22. Welsh oversaw all aspects of the performance program for coach Matt Painter’s Boilermakers, including the creation of a new performance center featuring a nutrition center and sports science elements.
Welsh also spent two seasons at Temple as the director of basketball sports performance. Prior to his two seasons with the Owls, Welsh worked as a strength and conditioning coach for the basketball programs at IMG Academy. He began his career as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Illinois.
Welsh has trained a number of NBA players, including former Vanderbilt star Luke Kornet, Oscar Tshiebwe, Zach Edey, Anfernee Simmons, Jaden Ivey, Meyers Leonard, Terrance Shannon, Josh Green, Rob Dillingham and Jarrett Allen among the list.
Welsh earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Eastern Illinois in 2015, where he also played golf for the Panthers. He has held his NSCA certification since 2015.
