Syracuse forward Matthew Moyer is transferring after two seasons with the Orange. The redshirt sophomore-to-be made the announcement a few days after the team’s loss to Duke in the Sweet 16. Moyer is a former four-star recruit from Ohio. Naturally, he has plenty of big-time options.
Moyer sat out his true freshman season due to injury. This year, he was the team’s starting power forward to begin the season, eventually being supplanted by Marek Dolezaj at mid-year. He remained a member of the rotation, and was primarily an energy guy off the bench for Jim Boeheim. Moyer finished the season averaging 3.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.
His mother has been handling his transfer recruitment. She spoke to Syracuse.com a few weeks ago, outlining the eight schools that were under consideration.
Already, she has narrowed a list to eight schools, some of which initially recruited her son. Those schools: Xavier, Vanderbilt, Stanford, Kansas State, Iowa, Creighton, Alabama and Iowa State. The Moyers are attempting to set up a visit to Vanderbilt. And they are awaiting word on who will replace Chris Mack at Xavier. (Mack recently took the Louisville job.)
Now, we know the five visits that Moyer will make. Interestingly, two of those are schools that were not previously involved.
Their inclusions make sense though. The two newcomers are big-time programs.

Kansas State, Vanderbilt, and Xavier all make the cut from the earlier list. The new additions: Florida and Texas.

Earlier in the recruitment, Moyer’s mother mentioned the family’s close relationship to then-Xavier assistant Travis Steele. He has since been promoted to head coach, after Chris Mack’s departure to Louisville.
The Musketeers still seem like a strong candidate to land the Columbus-native. However, Matthew Moyer, a member of National Honor Society is very academically inclined, making Vanderbilt an interesting candidate. Florida and Texas also have strong name brands, and have clearly made quick impressions in the last two weeks.
