Cincinnati’s offense got the job done on Tuesday night and they did so against a left-handed starting pitcher. Ranger Suarez had one of his worst outings of the year as the Reds pounded out 10 hits and scored six runs against him. Brady Singer and the bullpen took care of the rest as they combined to allow just one run as they evened up the series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Brady Singer didn’t allow a baserunner in the first three innings of the game. In the bottom of the 3rd inning the offense helped him out when the Reds picked up two 1-out singles and then saw Spencer Steer cash in for a 2-run, 2-out double to put the home team ahead.
After another perfect inning in the 4th by Singer, Miguel Andujar came up to lead off the bottom of the frame and crushed a home run just inside the foul pole down the left field line to tack on a run and make it 3-0.
Leading off the 5th inning was former Red Nick Castellanos and he hit a hard grounder towards shortstop where it hit off of Elly De La Cruz’s glove and trickled into left field for a single and the first baserunner for the day for Philadelphia. No sweat for Singer who came back with a strikeout and then a grounder that resulted in an inning-ending double play.
The Phillies would make their first real threat of the night in the 6th inning when they got a 2-out single from Rafael Marchan and a double by Trea Turner that put both in scoring position. That brought NL home run and RBI leader Kyle Schwarber to the plate, but Singer got him to ground out to first base to end the inning and hold onto a 3-0 lead.
Cincinnati’s offense went to work in the bottom of the inning and unlike the Phillies, the Reds were able to come through and push some runs across the board. Austin Hays walked to start the inning and moved to third on a double by Matt McLain. Jose Trevino then singled in both runners. Back-to-back singles followed to load the bases and that led to a pitching change to bring in Joe Ross. Spencer Steer greeted him with a 400-foot sacrifice fly to dead center to tack on another run and push the lead to 6-0 for the home team.
As the 7th inning was getting ready to start, the tarp was pulled out and the game headed to a rain delay. After nearly 30 minutes of waiting around and watching rain fall the tarp was pulled and Graham Ashcraft took the mound to start the 7th inning and he pitched like he knew more rain was coming as he struck out two batters in a perfect and quick inning. Brent Suter would give up a 1-out single in the top of the 8th inning, but he worked around it and kept the shutout going.
With rain coming down again in the 9th inning and a 6-0 lead, the Reds sent Sam Moll to the mound to try and finish things out. He would get a grounder to third base for the first out of the inning. Kyle Schwarber would strike out looking for the second out. But Bryce Harper hit a ball half-way to Kentucky for a solo home run to keep his team from being shutout on the night. Moll would rebound to strike out Nick Castellanos to end the game and seal a 6-1 win.
Key Moment of the Game
Jose Trevino’s 2-run single in the 6th inning.
Notes Worth Noting
Brady Singer threw just 71 pitches in his six innings while striking out six batters. The bullpen followed up with three innings of walking no one and striking out four batters, giving the team 10 of them on the night without a walk. The Phillies only walked two Reds hitters but also only had four strikeouts. Three of those strikeouts belonged to Matt McLain.
The “Reds haven’t been swept this year” thing continues.
