The Cincinnati Reds best pitcher this season has been Tyler Mahle, who has a 1.75 ERA with 36 strikeouts through five starts and 25.2 innings. His strikeout rate took a big jump up in 2020 and it’s up once again this season. A lot of his success comes against left-handed hitters this year as they’ve gone just 5-54 with no extra-base hits against him. Right-handed hitters have hit .265/.342/.500 against him, but in far fewer at-bats as teams have tried stacking lefties against him so far this season.
Pitch usage from 2021
In his five starts this season Trevor Williams has a 4.44 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 24.1 innings. It’s a big difference from the previous two years with the Pirates where he posted a 5.60 ERA over 37 starts. Left-handed hitters have had more success against him this season, hitting .302/.412/.395 against him with six walks and 10 strikeouts. Right-handed hitters have hit .255/.305/.382 against him this season. Small sample size of just two starts, but away from Wrigley this season Williams has been lit up to the tune of .390/.457/.537 by opposing hitters.
