The Cincinnati Reds appear to be calling up right-handed pitcher Chase Petty from Triple-A for Wednesday’s doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals. Petty himself seems to confirm this, reposting on instagram a report of the news along with “Go Time”. Clint J West appears to be the first person to report this news over on Twitter. C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic has confirmed that Petty will start game two of the doubleheader. West also reported that infielder Tyler Callihan was going to be recalled from Louisville for the doubleheader.
Both players are on the 40-man roster and won’t require a move on that front. But there will have to be at least one move made for the 26-man roster. While the roster does get pushed to 27 players for a doubleheader, that’s still one player short of what is needed.
The postponed of the Reds and Cardinals game on Tuesday night put Cincinnati in a situation where they would have to either pitch someone on short rest moving forward or have to make the decision to call someone up in the next week to keep the starting five on their normal rotation. The Reds appear to have made the decision to go with Petty, the Reds #2 rated prospect for Wednesday’s game. He had been the scheduled pitcher in Memphis for Louisville on Tuesday, but he was scratched from that start. He will be on full rest for Wednesday.
In his five starts this season, the 22-year-old Chase Petty has a 3.52 ERA in 23.0 innings to go along with nine walks and 27 strikeouts. Things have gone much better than that of late, though. He pitched poorly in his season opener, but in the four starts since he’s allowed just three runs in 19.2 innings (1.37 ERA).
The Reds acquired Petty from the Minnesota Twins several years ago in the trade that sent Sonny Gray to the American League Central. Gray would sign with the Cardinals two years later, where he’s still at. So this story comes full circle.
When he was acquired, Chase Petty didn’t throw a 4-seam fastball as he relied heavily on his sinker. But over the last two years he’s started throwing a 4-seamer more than he’s throwing his sinker – though he does mix them up quite well. He has also added a cutter over the last two seasons to go along with his slider and change up.
He’s a hard throwing who has averaged 96.6 MPH on his 4-seam fastball in Triple-A, and 95.0 on his sinker. His 90 MPH cutter and slider are both plus offerings, while his change up is an average, but usable pitch. Petty shows solid control, but as we know – sometimes when a guy is making his debut things don’t always work out in this area right away.

Tyler Callihan gets the call
Cincinnati selected Tyler Callihan in the 3rd round of the 2019 draft. It’s been an up-and-down road for the left-handed hitter ever since. He’s dealt with several injuries in his career that have likely kept his on-field performance down at times and it’s certainly cost him time on the field over the years.
Last year he spent much of his season in Double-A Chattanooga where he played in 69 games. He missed 10 weeks in the middle of the season before returning in the second week of August and he came out hitting. In the next 23 games with the Lookouts and then four games in the final week of the season with Triple-A Louisville he hit .358/.451/.516. This year he began in Louisville and he’s picked up where he left off, hitting .303/.410/.528 in the first 24 games of the season.
The 24-year-old has spent most of his time in the minor leagues at second base, but has seen action at third base at times over the years. But starting in 2024 he began to see some time in left field, too an has played in 41 games out there between Double-A, Triple-A, and the Arizona Fall League.
