The Cincinnati Reds will go for the series win this afternoon. Pittsburgh won last night and if the Pirates win today they’ll salvage a split after losing the first two of the four game set. Cincinnati will send Hunter Greene to the mound to match up against lefty Jose Quintana, with the first pitch set for 1:35pm ET.

Hunter Greene
After averaging over 100 MPH on his fastball in his first two starts, Hunter Greene hasn’t not been there since. In his last start he was up from the previous few, averaging 98.4 MPH and touched 101. That was also that outing in which he threw more sliders than he threw fastballs.
Keeping the baseball in the park has been the big issue for Greene this season. Two starts ago against Milwaukee he allowed five of them in just 2.2 innings. He rebounded from that start last time out, giving up just two runs in 5.1 innings against the same Brewers team. Still, he’s only made it through one start without allowing a homer this year and that outing lasted just 3.1 innings.

Jose Quintana
Lefties aren’t getting much playing time against Jose Quintana this year, but when they have they’ve gone hitless. Righties are clearly doing better than that, but the left-handed pitcher has been good against them, too. Right-handed hitters are hitting just .235 without much power. He’s not striking many guys out, and his walk rate is a tad high, too. But he’s kept the ball in the ballpark so far this year.

News and Notes
Joey Votto’s rehab starts out well
Last night saw Joey Votto get three plate appearances with Triple-A Louisville as he began his rehab assignment. He walked, had an RBI single, and walked again before exiting the game after his third plate appearance as planned. He served as the designated hitter in the game.
Sandy Leon added to the taxi squad
Cincinnati added catcher Sandy Leon to the taxi squad. He’s played in 15 games with Louisville and has hit .191/.306/.310. After Tyler Stephenson exited last night’s game when he took a foul ball off of his mask, the Reds want to have another catcher with them just in case.
