The Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks had their game halted by rain on Friday night at Great American Ball Park. Following the 6th inning the umpires couldn’t wait any longer as the infield had become saturated and was unplayable, so they called on the grounds crew to pull the tarp. And a few minutes later the Reds gave the thumbs up to start the fireworks show that was supposed to follow the game. Eventually, though, with the rain not expected to stop until after 3am, the game was suspended. It will be resumed on Saturday at 2:10pm ET. The game that was scheduled for 4:10pm ET between the two clubs will be played 40 minutes after the end of the resumed game (but not before 4:10pm ET if the resumed game ends quickly).
Arizona was able to take a 3-0 lead on back-to-back home runs in the 3rd inning from Ketel Marte (2-run home run) and Geraldo Perdomo. In the bottom of the same inning the Reds got a 2-run home run off of the bat of TJ Friedl that pulled Cincinnati within a run.
That 3-2 score is where the game remained until the bottom of the 6th inning. With the rain coming down and it seemingly like the tarp could be pulled at any moment it was Christian Encarnacion-Strand – fresh off of the injured list – providing the preview for the upcoming fireworks show with a 418-foot home run to center field that tied the game up at three. The Reds would get runners on the corners later in the inning but couldn’t push the go-ahead run across the plate.
As soon as the inning came to an end, so did the play of the game as the tarp was pulled and the game went into a delay that it never came back from.
