Nick Martinez cruised through the first two innings of the game and everything was looking good for the Reds, until it wasn’t. The Marlins broke through in a big way in the third inning. After Martinez allowed a leadoff walk, the Marlins tied the game two batters later via a Dane Myers single, and then just kept scoring. The first six batters reached base against Martinez, and it was 5-1 without the Reds even recording an out. By the time the inning ended, the Marlins had brought ten men to the plate while scoring seven runs, all done with singles, doubles and sacrifice flies.
The Marlins would tack on three runs in the sixth, with all runs charged to Martinez after he loaded the bases with no outs. He was pulled from the game at this point, but Scott Barlow allowed all three of the inherited runners to score. Martinez’s ERA jumped from 4.20 to 4.85 after this outing.
Meanwhile, Eury Pérez was dealing on the mound for the Marlins. Matt McLain broke an 0-for-18 slump with an opposite field home run off Pérez in the first inning. Pérez settled down after the home run; however, and he would go on to allow just two hits on one run with zero walks and eight strikeouts through five innings. Though the Reds scored on an error by Connor Norby with two outs in the ninth, the Marlins bullpen combined to allow just three hits over the four final innings.
Key Moment of the Game
The Marlins scored seven runs on six hits while sending ten batters to the plate in the top of the third inning.
Notes Worth Noting
-Joel Luckhaupt, statistician for Reds TV broadcasts, noted on Bluesky that Nick Martinez is the first pitcher since 7/26/1940 (Cliff Melton of the NY Giants) to give up 10+ ER in a game and also have four perfect innings in that same game.
-Jose Trevino entered the game with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. He allowed one run on four hits over two innings while throwing mostly eephus pitches. It was his second appearance of the season on the mound.
-Shortly after the McLain’s home run celebration, there was a giant roar from the dugout that could be heard on the TV broadcast. The team was congratulating Andrew Abbott, and everyone watching presumed it was because he made the NL All-Star team as a replacement pitcher. This news was confirmed a couple innings later by the Reds. We have more details on who he replaced and why he was chosen.
