Miguel Andujar to the Reds: Full Trade Breakdown

August 1, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

For their third and final trade of this year’s trade deadline, the Cincinnati Reds have acquired LF/3B/DH Miguel Andujar from the Athletics. They are sending RHP Kenya Huggins to the Athletics in return.

Andujar’s 2025 Production

The former New York Yankees budding superstar posted 2.8 bWAR in 2018, coming in second behind Shohei Ohtani for the American League Rookie of the Year Award. He has failed to produce just 1.0 bWAR in a season since, with a 0.4 bWAR in 2024 as his second-highest mark in his career.

On the season, he is slashing .298/.329/.436 for a .765 OPS and 110 OPS+. He is a plus offensively, but grades out poorly defensively in the outfield and the infield.

His -7 OAA on the year is in the 3rd percentile, although he does have a rocket of an arm (93.1 MPH Arm Strength — 93rd percentile). He might make some appearances in left field throughout the remainder of the season, but he won’t be the everyday left fielder. Perhaps the smaller left field dimensions at Great American Ball Park can make his defensive duties easier to handle.

Andujar’s Fit

The fact that the Reds do not have a true DH means that Andujar is likely to become a fixture in that spot. His lack of defensive abilities limits his production, but his bat is good enough to stick.

A 110 OPS+ on the year is encouraging, but there’s a chance the Reds can unlock an even better version of him.

In 48 plate appearances this year against left-handed pitchers, Andujar is slashing a monstrous .422/.458/.578 for a 1.036 OPS. This isn’t a fluke either, as in 2024, he slashed .411/.459/.536 for a .995 OPS in 61 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers.

Andujar is a bona fide left-handed masher, which will bring in a very valuable platoon piece into Cincinnati’s lineup.

Departing Pieces

This trade was a one-for-one trade, with minor league pitcher Kenya Huggins being the only piece the Reds are sending in return. He has spent the past three seasons in Single-A, with this season being his heaviest workload so far.

In 63 1/3 innings this season (18 G/15 GS), Kenya has a 3.69 ERA and a 3.66 FIP. He is just 22 years old and will be an interesting piece to watch develop in the Athletics organization.
