The Cincinnati Reds ended a 4-game losing streak on Saturday night in Milwaukee. The Reds pounced all over Brewers starter Elvin Rodriguez, hitting four home runs against him and grabbing a 7-0 lead that held up despite plenty of offensive output from both teams the rest of the way.

After breakout of their scoring funk on Friday night, the Cincinnati Reds didn’t waste much time getting on the board on Saturday. Elly De La Cruz drew a 2-out walk in the top of the 1st inning and then came in to score on a double by Gavin Lux. The next inning saw the Reds put together a 2-out rally that started with a Blake Dunn home run. Jose Trevino followed up with a single and then he scored on a homer by TJ Friedl that made it 4-0.
Brady Singer was getting his job done on the other side, keeping the Brewers off the board through the first three innings. In the top of the 4th it was more power baseball for Cincinnati. Christian Encarnacion-Strand unloaded on a 93 MPH fastball and hit it off of the scoreboard in center, estimated at 451 feet, to extend the Reds lead to 5-0. But they weren’t done just yet. Blake Dunn was hit by a pitch later in the inning and then came in to score on Jose Trevino’s first home run with Cincinnati that pushed the lead to 7-0.
Milwaukee, down by a touchdown, got their offense going in the bottom of the 4th. Sal Frelick led off with a triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Oliver Dunn. The next inning it was a 1-out walk that started a little rally for the Brewers. Four straight singles followed, but the last one did the most damage as Jake Fraley whiffed on fielding the grounder and it rolled by him and to the wall, bringing in three runs and allowing Milwaukee to cut the lead to 7-5.
Taylor Rogers entered the game for the Reds to start the 6th inning, taking over for Brady Singer who was charged with three earned in 5.0 innings. He fired off a perfect inning with a strikeout. Cincinnati’s offense went to work in the next half inning, loading the bases with no outs. Elly De La Cruz then came through with a 2-run single. Jeimer Candelario would cap off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to make it a 10-5 game.
Milwaukee wasn’t going to just roll over, though. Scott Barlow took over for Cincinnati in the 7th and the Brewers rallied to load the bases thanks to a double sandwiched between two walks. The Reds called on Tony Santillan to come in and try to get out of the jam. What he did was jam Oliver Dunn, but his blooper into shallow center fell just ahead of a diving Blake Dunn for a 2-run double that made it 10-7. A strikeout followed to end the inning.
The road team would tack on a run in the top of the 9th inning when Santiago Espinal led off with a double and then scored on a single by Gavin Lux. With an 11-7 lead the Reds sent Emilio Pagan to the mound to try and close things out. He didn’t make it easy on himself. He got a ground out to begin the inning, but then walked William Contreras and gave up a single to Sal Frelick. Pagan would get a fly out on the 5th pitch of the at-bat against Jake Bauers. Another five pitch at-bat followed and Pagan finished it off by blowing a fastball by Oliver Dunn for strike three as Cincinnati held on for an 11-7 win and ended a 4-game losing streak.
Key Moment of the Game
Jose Trevino’s 2-run home run in the 4th inning. It built the lead up to seven runs and while 11 runs were scored in the game after that, it helped cement a lead large enough to keep the Brewers from making a comeback.
Notes Worth Noting
For the second day in a row Matt McLain was a late scratch in the starting lineup due to a tight hamstring.
TJ Friedl had four hits on the day. Santiago Espinal, Gavin Lux, and Jose Trevino all added in two hits. Jeimer Candelario was the only starter for Cincinnati that failed to get a hit in the game who also happened to get an at-bat.
Reds hitters only struck out six times on the day. They also clubbed four home runs off of Elvin Rodriguez. Cincinnati pitchers didn’t give up any home runs and had 12 strikeouts.
Reds are the first team since the start of the National League (1876) to score 10+ runs on both ends of a 6-game stretch while only scoring 2 or fewer runs in the 4 games in between.
