The Cincinnati Reds sent catcher Tyler Stephenson to join the Louisville Bats for a rehab assignment earlier today. Working his way back from an oblique strain, Stephenson found himself in the Bats lineup at the #2 spot and starting behind the plate.
In his first at-bat of the day, Tyler Stephenson struck out against Javier Assad. The next time he came to the plate he came through with an RBI double on a ground that bounced over the head of the third baseman and went down the line. The catcher came back to the plate in the 5th inning for what turned out to be his final at-bat. He battled with Keegan Thompson for seven pitches, but he took a called third strike that just touched the lower outside corner of the strikezone.
Sam Moll fires a shutout inning
Also in Louisville on a rehab assignment on Tuesday night was left-handed reliever Sam Moll. He hasn’t pitched in two weeks as he’s dealt with a shoulder impingement, but he got back on the mound with the Bats and threw a hitless inning against Iowa. The lefty began the 7th inning and threw 17 pitches, with nine strikes as he worked around a walk and had a strikeout during his inning of work.
Wade Miley struggles in his first start
While the two players mentioned above are on big league rehab assignments, Wade Miley started a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday night in Dayton. The lefty had a hybrid Tommy John surgery last May when he was pitching with the Milwaukee Brewers. He made just two starts before the injury and in the offseason he signed a minor league deal with the Reds.
The return to the mound was a bit quicker than usual – he’s less than a year out at this point from surgery. Things didn’t go well for Miley on the night. Miley gave up a double and a single to begin the game, but got out of that jam in the 1st without allowing a run. In the 2nd inning he gave up three more doubles, hit a batter, and gave up a single before getting three outs in the frame. He returned for the 3rd inning and gave up two more doubles and a home run before being pulled from the game. His final line: 2.1IP, 9 hits, 6 earned runs, no walks, 2 strikeouts. He threw 49 pitches on the night and 33 of them were strikes.
