Reds Option Alexis Diaz to Triple-A After Rough Start

May 2, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The Cincinnati Reds have optioned former All-Star closer Alexis Diaz to Triple-A Louisville. The demotion comes following a disastrous start to the season. Diaz, once seen as a cornerstone of the Reds’ bullpen, has struggled to regain his dominant form from previous years. In a corresponding move, the team has called up right-hander Luis Mey, who is set to make his major league debut.

Diaz has more home runs (four) and walks (five) allowed than strikeouts (three) in six innings pitched, some coming off the injured list on April 15.

The #Reds today recalled from Triple-A Louisville RHP Luis Mey and optioned to Louisville RHP Alexis Díaz (post-game on April 30).

Reds Bullpen in Flux Amid Alexis Diaz Demotion

Diaz’s demotion marks a sharp fall for a pitcher who just two seasons ago. He was one of the most effective relievers in the National League. In 2022, he burst onto the scene with a 1.84 ERA over 59 appearances, striking out 83 batters in 63 2/3 innings. That performance earned him a fifth-place finish in National League Rookie of the Year voting. He followed it up with a strong 2023 campaign, locking down 37 saves and earning his first All-Star selection while posting a 3.07 ERA and 30 percent strikeout rate.

However, the cracks began to show in 2024. Diaz posted a 3.99 ERA across 56 1/3 innings, with his strikeout rate falling to 22.7 percent. His command faltered, and his walk rate climbed. The Reds hoped a reset over the offseason would help him bounce back, but his spring training performance was underwhelming before a hamstring injury sidelined him to start the season.

When Diaz returned, he was not reinstated as the team’s closer. It was a role that had since been handed to Graham Ashcraft. In limited action this season, Diaz has appeared in six games and struggled mightily, allowing eight earned runs across six innings for a 12.00 ERA.

The Reds are sending him to Triple-A Louisville in hopes that he can rediscover his mechanics and regain confidence. If the issues persist, Diaz could become a candidate for non-tendering or designation for assignment. If it gets to that point, it would be a remarkable turnaround from his recent status as a bullpen anchor.
