Reds Outfielder Lands on Injured List for Third Time This Season

June 25, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

The Cincinnati Reds placed TJ Friedl on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain. The Reds promoted Levi Jordan from Triple-A Louisville to take Friedl’s spot on the roster. Friedl initially tweaked the hamstring a week ago, missing two games before returning to action. However, he aggravated the injury on Sunday. The trip to the IL is the third this season for Friedl, who also missed time with wrist and thumb injuries.

Reds manager David Bell said Friedl was playing at about 80-to-85%. “Maybe it got worse on Sunday. He couldn’t play how he needed to.” Bell said to Charlie Goldsmith of the Enquirer.

Bell hopes that Friedl will be back in two to three weeks.

Friedl, 28, missed the season’s first six weeks after breaking his wrist during spring training. He played six games and tallied 24 plate appearances before being hit by a Kyle Harrison pitch. Friedl went on the 10-day IL with a broken thumb. It’s terrible luck for someone who just came back from a fractured right wrist on March 16 that kept him out for six weeks.

“When I fractured my wrist, it was my first time ever breaking anything and I remember how that felt internally,” he said to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. “It was hard to tell with my thumb because it was so numb. My nail was bruised up. Halfway up, my thumb was all numb and bruised up.”

Friedl was one of the Reds’ best players in 2023. He occupied one of the top two spots in the batting order and posted a .279/.352/.467 line across 556 plate appearances. Friedl hit 18 home runs and stole 27 bases while playing strong center field defense. His efforts made him a key contributor to a Cincinnati team that came up shy of the postseason.
