Sunday night saw Hunter Greene take the mound in Omaha, Nebraska for the second time this week. On Tuesday night he made his second rehab start after pitching in a game out in Arizona on June 23rd where he threw 2.0 hitless innings against a lineup of mostly teenagers. Moving up to Triple-A on Tuesday he gave up five hits – two of which were home runs – in 2.1 innings and was charged with four earned runs while striking out six of the 12 hitters he faced. Things went quite a bit better on Sunday as the right-handed starter gave up no earned runs, though he was charged with two unearned runs thanks to shaky defense behind him.
Greene threw 66 pitches with 42 strikes in his 3.1 innings where he allowed three hits and one walk. All three hits were singles and one of them didn’t even leave the infield. He would also pick up seven strikeouts on the day while facing 15 batters.
For the most part, Hunter Greene looked like himself. He was throwing strikes and was in control of the game. During the outing he had 13 swings and misses, getting six of them on his fastball, three of them on the splitter, and four of them with his slider.
When it comes to what he was throwing on the day, here’s the breakdown. He threw his fastball 50% of the time and threw it for strikes 76% of the time and averaged 98.8 MPH while topping out at 100.2 in the game. He threw his slider 32% of the time in the game and threw it for strikes 62% of the time. The splitter was thrown 18% of the time but was a strike just 33% of the time that he threw it. But out of the four that batters did choose to swing at, they missed on three of them.
With Greene having thrown 66 pitches in the game, the question becomes whether or not they bring him up to the big leagues for his next start and give him a pitch count somewhere in the 80’s? Or will they have him make another start with Louisville this upcoming week before bringing him back on what will then likely be a full and ready workload?
Ian Gibaut’s Rehab
Hunter Greene wasn’t the only Red in Omaha on a rehab assignment. Ian Gibaut began his assignment on Sunday. He’s trying to come back from shoulder impingement for the secnd time this season. He missed nearly a month between late April and late May with the injury earlier in the season, and then five weeks later headed back to the injured list with the injury. This time he has also already missed five weeks with the issue.
Gibaut pitched a perfect 5th inning for Louisville on Sunday. He needed just 11 pitches to get through the inning and he fired off eight of those pitches for strikes. He picked up one ground out and two flyball outs in his outing. During his day he averaged 94.7 MPH with his fastball, which is right in line with where he’s been this season (and up from 2024 when he was mostly injured, and the tiniest bit down from where he was in 2023).
