There’s not much time remaining in the regular season, but Rhett Lowder is trying to get back in time to actually see action in the big leagues in 2025. Lowder dealt with elbow issues this past winter as he began to throw and prepare for spring training. That led to him landing on the injured list once it became available in the spring. In early May he was ready to start a rehab assignment and he made four starts between the Arizona Complex League Reds, the Dayton Dragons, and the Louisville Bats. In that final start for Louisville he injured his oblique and it’s been nearly four months since then.
This evening Rhett Lowder was back on the mound for Louisville as they took on the Toledo Mud Hens. It was his first appearance since May 22nd. Lowder wound up throwing 2.0 innings on the day. He would give up a run on two hits and a hit batter. The right-handed starter also struck out two of the nine hitters that he faced. Overall he threw 34 pitches with 25 of them being strikes.
From a velocity standpoint, he threw the fastball in the 94 MPH range and topped out just over 95 MPH. He also mixed in his slider and change up. The slider got three swings-and-misses on it, while the 2-seamer got two swings-and-misses.
The Cincinnati Reds, including tonight’s game, have just 15 games remaining in the season. They are just 1.5 games out of the final wild card spot, so there’s still a chance that they could go on a run in the next two-and-a-half weeks and push themselves into the playoffs. If they could get there, adding Lowder to the pitching staff would probably be quite beneficial. Of course the Reds have a whole lot of things they’ve got to get done before that can happen.
