The Cincinnati Reds have placed starting pitcher Hunter Greene on the 15-day injured list after reaggravating a right groin injury and have signed Wade Miley to a major league contract. The club has also transferred Rhett Lowder from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list to make room for Miley.

Hunter Greene Sidelined Again with Groin Injury
Greene, 25, broke out as one of the top starters in baseball last year, pitching to a 2.75 ERA in 26 starts, earning his first All-Star nod and finishing 8th in the National League Cy Young Award race. To start the 2025 season, Greene continued to build on his success, pitching to a 0.98 ERA in his first four starts.
On May 7th, in a start against the Atlanta Braves, Greene could not finish the game after experiencing discomfort in his right groin and went on the 15-day injured list after the game. He was able to make three starts after returning from the injured list, but was pulled from his start last night in the fifth inning after feeling more discomfort.
The Reds opted to place Greene back on the IL before seeing the results of his MRI. “We talked to him. We talked to the trainers. Since it’s happened once and now this is twice, we’ve got to figure this out,” said Reds manager Terry Francona. “His lower back was starting to bother him, we’re trying to figure out if it was related. We’ve got to get him healthy. It was kind of an easy decision, even without seeing the MRI.”
Wade Miley Returns to Cincinnati
With Greene missing time, the Reds have brought back a familiar face in Wade Miley. After rehabbing from a torn UCL he suffered last year with the Milwaukee Brewers, Miley signed a minor league deal with the Reds earlier in the season. He opted out of that deal on May 31st, but signed a major league deal days later to join the club’s rotation.

In his last full season in 2023, Miley pitched to a 3.14 ERA in 23 starts, and the Reds are hoping they can bring that form back out of him, even at 38 years old. While rehabbing in the minors, he has pitched to an 8.84 ERA, although most of that is due to a bad first outing where he let up six runs in 2 1/3 innings.
Even without Greene, Miley will still join one of the better rotations in baseball. Andrew Abbott had the lowest ERA in baseball in May with a 0.55, and Nick Lodolo has been promising, with a 3.10 ERA in 12 starts.
