Reds Rookie Sensation Sets Unprecedented MLB Record

July 15, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Just six days into his major league career, Cincinnati Reds rookie sensation Rece Hinds is already re-writing the record books. Since making his big-league debut on July 8th, Hinds has had one of the most memorable and historic starts in baseball history. In Saturday’s win over the Miami Marlins, the 23-year-old outfielder blasted two homers off the second deck, marking his first multi-homer game through six major league appearances.

His nine extra-base hits are two more than any other player in a six-game span since at least 1901. Hinds is just the second player with at least five home runs in his first six outings, trailing only Trevor Story, who went deep seven times for the Colorado Rockies in 2016. On top of that, Saturday was also his third game with multiple extra-base hits. Hall of Famer Willie McCovey is the only other player to achieve that feat within their first six career games, which he did as a member of the San Francisco Giants in 1959. Three records that the hot-hitting rookie was not even aware of.

In 6 days as a big leaguer, Rece Hinds of the @Reds has:

9 total XBH
5 total HR
a game with all 3 types of XBH
a grand slam
a multi-HR game

Nobody else in MLB history has done all of that over any 6-day span at any point in his career. pic.twitter.com/JupzYqSPOw

“Honestly, I wasn’t [aware of it] until some people started talking about it,” Hinds said. “I try not to think about it too much. Try to stay humble, stay even-keeled, not get too high, not get too low. We have the All-Star break coming up, a couple of days off, so [it will] probably sink in a little bit more then, when I’m just relaxing, thinking about the week that just happened.”

Reds Rookie Rece Hinds Exceeding Expectations and Making History

When Cincinnati promoted the 23-year-old from Triple-A Louisville last week, they were hoping he would give them another power bat in their lineup. But Hinds has exceeded any and all expectations. The former second-round pick is batting .440/.481/1.240 with a 1.721 OPS in 25 at-bats. He slashed .216/.290/.409 with 13 homers in 77 games with Triple-A Louisville before being called up to Cincinnati.

Despite having an abundance of power, Rece Hinds often struggles to make contact. He has the second-most strikeouts in the minors (126), as well as the fifth-highest strikeout rate at 38.4%. Regardless, the Reds will continue to roll with the red-hot rookie and his incredible production for however long it lasts.
