Top Cincinnati Reds prospect Chase Petty will make his major league debut Wednesday in the second game of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals. Rain postponed Tuesday’s game between the National League Central rivals, prompting a day-night doubleheader. Right-hander Brady Singer, originally scheduled to start Tuesday, will pitch the opener, while Petty will take the mound for the nightcap as the Reds’ 27th man on the roster.

Chase Petty to Make Debut Against Cardinals
Petty, who is ranked as the Reds’ No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline, is 0-2 with a 3.52 ERA in five starts for Triple-A Louisville with 27 strikeouts and nine walks over 23 innings this season. Petty dominated his last start with Louisville, allowing one hit over six scoreless innings last Wednesday. He struck out seven and walked two in a 1-0, 11-inning victory over the Iowa Cubs.
The Reds acquired Petty, a first-round pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2021, in the 2022 trade that sent right-hander Sonny Gray to Minnesota. Gray, now a member of the Cardinals, will be at Great American Ball Park for Petty’s debut Wednesday.
Petty is known for his fastball that can reach 100 mph. He can still throw in the high 90s, but is more of a sinker/slider pitcher now.
Petty’s Debut Helps Reds Manage Busy Stretch
Winners of five straight, the Reds have a scheduled off day Thursday between series in Miami and Denver. After that, however, they won’t get another break until May 12—a stretch of 13 consecutive games. Promoting Petty for Wednesday’s doubleheader allows the team to keep the rest of the rotation on schedule. Left-hander Andrew Abbott, originally slated to pitch Wednesday, is now likely to start Thursday’s game against the Cardinals. That move would push right-hander Hunter Greene to Friday for the series opener against the Washington Nationals.
