Reds Trade Luis Castillo to Mariners

Reds Ship Luis Castillo to Mariners for Prospect Haul

Cue the fire sale in Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Reds have traded right handed pitcher Luis Castillo to the Seattle Mariners for a huge haul of prospects. Castillo’s name has been a hot one on the market with multiple teams in the mix all year long. The right hander has a 2.86 ERA (66 ERA-minus) in 85 innings so far this season. The Mariners desperately needed starting pitching, and the Reds capitalized. This is the second time this season we’ve seen a big deal go down between the two teams.

The Luis Castillo Deal

The Mariners will be getting red-hot starting pitcher Luis Castillo on their end of the deal, and he didn’t come cheap. The Mariners traded four prospects back to Cincinnati in order to get the deal done. Seattle has sent their number one, three, and five prospects for the Reds right hander. Noelvi Marte, Edwin Arroyo, and Levi Stoudt are all now a member of Cincinnati’s minor league system. Marte is just about major league ready and will be a welcome addition to the Reds infield once he is called up. Arroyo is likely a year or so away but is another tremendous prospect. The Reds also receive Andrew Moore in the deal.

The Young Guns

Marte is the biggest name in this deal for the Reds. So far this season, Marte is hitting .270/.360/.460 in the minors with 15 home runs. He can play both shortstop and third base. Arroyo is hitting .316/.385/.514 in 87 games for single-A Modesto. Arroyo has experience at both second base and shortstop. Levi Stoudt is a right handed pitcher and has amassed a 5.16 ERA across 87 innings in double-A, while racking up 82 strikeouts. All three will likely slide into the Reds top ten prospects that already boasts a few blue chips. Andrew Moore is a tall right handed pitcher who has put up strong numbers for single-A Modesto this year. He carries a 1.95 ERA across 32 1/3 innings pitched with 58 strikeouts. All of them will make nice additions to the Reds farm system, which is already stacked.

While Castillo will surely be missed, the Reds didn’t miss on this trade. They secured an absolute haul for the most coveted pitcher on the trade market this year. After gaining three of the Mariners top five prospects, they will have a loaded farm system to work with. This is only the beginning to what will be a big fire sale for Cincinnati, but it’s a fantastic start. Nick Krall and company hit the nail on the head with this trade. While the Reds are in full-on rebuild mode, the Mariners are gearing up for their first postseason run since 2001. This trade will benefit both teams for years to come, more specifically the Reds. In the end, both teams got what they wanted. The only thing left to do now is wait to see how it pans out in the coming future.
