If you watched the Cincinnati Reds vs Atlanta Braves game on Monday night then you saw Tyler Callihan collide with the wall in foul territory in left field. If you didn’t watch the game then you might be better off having not seen the result of the collision. The Reds rookie left the game after the play, which was ruled an inside-the-park home run.
It was obvious at the time that Callihan was seriously injured and had broken his arm. About an hour after he left the game the Reds announced that he had indeed broken his arm. After the game the news was worse. Manager Terry Francona told the media that Callihan had a couple of broken bones in his arm and that he would return to Cincinnati and would require surgery, as reported by Mark Sheldon of Reds.com.
It was only the 4th game of the big league career for Tyler Callihan on Monday night. After going hitless in his first two games against St. Louis in a doubleheader (0-for-3 in the two games) he would pick up his first hit on Saturday against Washington. In his first at-bat of the day he came to the plate with Jake Fraley standing at third base in a tie game. Ahead in the count 3-1, Callihan got a fastball from Trevor Williams and he lined it into center.
The 3rd round pick from the 2019 draft is now going to have to wait a while for an opportunity to pick up his second big league hit. At this point there’s no timeline for his return. We will likely have more information on that after he gets back to Cincinnati and has surgery and the medical staff has a better understanding of all that it took to get everything set in his arm.
