Report: Reds Interested in Reunion with Slugging Infielder

July 24, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The Cincinnati Reds might be looking to reunite with their former third baseman. According to a report from C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic on Wednesday, there is “mutual interest” between the Reds and the Arizona Diamondbacks that would send slugger Eugenio Suárez back to Cincinnati, where he spent seven seasons.

Report: “Mutual Interest” Between Reds, DBacks on Eugenio Suárez Trade

The Reds would be buying high on Suárez, who leads the major leagues with 86 RBI and the National League with 36 homers. Still in a competitive position in the NL Central, they should be looking to add some pieces in the coming days. With the Diamondbacks barely on the edge of contention, they will likely be selling at the trade deadline. Suárez in particular has been at the center of trade talks. So, on paper, a deal involving Suárez makes sense for both sides.

In terms of young pitching talent, Rosecrans mentions in his article that the Reds probably won’t want to give up either Chase Burns or Rhett Lowder in a trade. However, he indicated that Chase Petty could be available in a potential deal. Petty has struggled this season, both in his three major league appearances and at Triple-A Louisville. A change of scenery could be in store for the 22-year-old rookie.

The #Reds and Diamondbacks have “mutual interest” in a trade for 3B Eugenio Suarez according to @ctrent of The Athletic.

Perhaps more likely, though, is a package deal involving a glut of Reds minor league infielders. With Elly De La Cruz serving as the team’s breakout star, it may be a while before the Reds need a new major league shortstop. Trading one or more minor leaguers to get Suárez is a deal the Reds would probably go for.

However, MLB Network insider Mark Feinsand reported later on Wednesday that while the two clubs have discussed Suárez, sources say that a full deal coming together appears to be “a long shot.”

The Reds and Diamondbacks have indeed discussed Eugenio Suarez, but sources called it “a long shot” that a deal comes together. Arizona is shopping Suarez, Josh Naylor, Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, according to sources, as all are on expiring contracts.

Suárez No Stranger to Cincy

After debuting with the Detroit Tigers in 2014, Suárez was traded to the Reds ahead of the 2015 season. There, he became a premier (albeit high-strikeout) slugger, enjoying an All-Star campaign in 2018 and following it up with a 49-homer season in 2019. Cincinnati then traded him to the Seattle Mariners ahead of the 2022 season, who, in turn, traded him to Arizona following the 2023 season. Due to all these trades with no free agency in between, Suárez is still technically under the terms of the seven-year deal (plus one-year option) he signed with the Reds before the 2018 season.

The Last Word

While several other teams, including the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees, have shown interest in acquiring Suárez, a reunion with Cincinnati would be among the more intriguing outcomes. The Reds sit in third place in the NL Central at 53-50, 8 1/2 games behind the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers. However, manager Terry Francona has them only 2 1/2 games out of a wild card spot in his first year at the helm in Cincy. While the Diamondbacks are a mere three games lower in that race, they appear to have more of a seller’s mentality as the deadline approaches than the Reds. Whether a trade to bring Eugenio Suárez back to the Reds happens or not, it appears the stars have aligned to at least make it a real possibility.
