The mighty New York Yankees are in Cincinnati to face the Reds

Are the Reds up to the task?

Nobody in the American League has scored more runs (395) this season than the New York Yankees. They lead all AL clubs in SLG (.452), OBP (.338), wOBA (.342), wRC+ (121), and HR (118), ranking second in all Major League Baseball to only the Los Angeles Dodgers in each of those categories.

They rake. Aaron Judge rakes. And they’re in Great American Ball Park to rake against the Cincinnati Reds, should things go their way.

The Yankees have luck on their side in that they won’t see Hunter Greene or Andrew Abbott this series, the two being the co-aces of the Reds so far in 2025. Instead, they’ll get to take on Nick Lodolo, rookie Chase Burns, and Brady Singer as the Reds look to escape this challenge still above the .500 mark – they sit at just 40-38 on the year after dropping two of three on the road in St. Louis over the weekend.

The Reds, meanwhile, will face a pair of left-handed starters this series in Carlos Rodon and Max Fried, who’s been just about as good as any pitcher in baseball so far this season. We’ve long detailed how poorly the Reds hit against LHP – their current 74 wRC+ ranks better than only four clubs in all of baseball right now – so they’ll have to find a way to rectify that to stand any chance in this particular series.

New York leads the AL East at 45-32, while the Reds once again find themselves in fourth place in a surprisingly competitive NL Central (and 6.5 games back in total). The Reds also find themselves 3 full games back of the final NL Wild Card spot as they enter play in this series, with each of the Cardinals and San Diego Padres ahead of them in that chase.

It’s a big series by GABP standards, and the hope is that the stadium will be packed with more than just travelling Yankee fans.
