Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Cincinnati Reds fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.
Blown saves are a fact of baseball life, as is the idea that the great portion of arms who at times look unhittable will eventually go somewhat haywire.
The Cincinnati Reds, who once looked like they had a young, controllable closer of the future in Alexis Díaz, have now seen his struggles throw their bullpen mix into flux. His velocity is down 2.5 mph from when he broke into the bigs back in 2022, the time off to let his hamstring heal (and hopefully have that help fix his mechanics) doesn’t look like it worked through 4 games back, and the Reds – who are ill-built to give away games – already have a trio of blown saves to their name.
The question is, who do you think should be closing games from this group?
Should they stick with Emilio Pagán, a notorious fly-ball heavy pitcher who’s already served up an untenable rate of long balls this year?
Should they pivot to Graham Ashcraft, who was only a starter seemingly just a minute ago and has no closing experience?
Should they throw Díaz back in that type of leverage to see if it’s the adrenaline of the close that he needs to find his stuff again?
They took a big financial swing (for them) to trade for Taylor Rogers, who’s closed some 83 big league games over the course of his career. Maybe give him the shot?
Or, should they look completely elsewhere in these trying times?
