Cincinnati had a chance to pull off a sweep on Wednesday but the Yankees had other ideas. New York took an early lead and they never looked back as they tacked on runs throughout the game while the Reds offense struggled to do much and the road team avoided the sweep with a 7-1 win.

Jasson Dominguez led off the 2nd inning with a double off of the wall in center. He could come in to score later in the inning on a 1-out single by Trent Grisham that put the Yankees in the lead. The next inning began with a single on a ball that was in the glove of a sliding TJ Friedl but he couldn’t hold on and it trickled out of his glove. That proved costly as Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed up by hitting a ball to Kentucky (technically it went 433 feet and landed three-quarters up the seats in right center) that extended New York’s lead to 3-0.
Elly De La Cruz led off the bottom of the 4th inning with a single. He would move up to second on a ground out and then come in to score on an infield single by Spencer Steer that saw the throw get away from first baseman Ben Rice. The Yankees got that run back in the top of the 5th on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Volpe where Ben Rice had to go back to the bag and tag up a second time, but no one behind the play seemed to tell the cutoff man – Elly De La Cruz – that he had a play at the plate so when he caught the relay throw he turned to look at third base to be sure the runner at second didn’t try to also tag up and advance before he noticed Rice hadn’t yet scored and threw home just a tad too late.
In the 6th inning that Yankees would get to face the Reds bullpen after Brady Singer covered the first five innings. New York welcomed Ian Gibaut with three straight hits, including an RBI double by Aaron Judge that made it 5-1. Back-to-back ground outs followed, but they each moved Judge up a base and he would score on the second one to push the Yankees lead to five runs.
The Reds kept New York off of the board in the 7th and 8th innings, but the Yankees got to Brent Suter in the top of the 9th inning. Jasson Dominguez picked up his second double of the game and then scored on a 1-out single from Austin Wells that made it 7-1.
Much like the rest of the game, Cincinnati couldn’t get their offense going in the bottom of the 9th. They went down in order as the Yankees picked up a win and were able to avoid the sweep.
Key Moment of the Game
It’s difficult to pick out one moment here, but the Yankees scored twice in the 6th inning to make it a 5-1 game and really felt like with the way Cincinnati was hitting that the game was over at that point.
Notes Worth Noting
The Reds had just four hits on the day. Elly De La Cruz had two of them.
Cincinnati had not been more than four games over the .500 mark this season. They still haven’t.
Austin Hays went 1-3 with a strikeout while on rehab tonight for Double-A Chattanooga. He played in the field tonight after spending Tuesday’s game as the designated hitter. Noelvi Marte went 0-3 in the game, was hit by a pitch, and scored a run.
